Terrorist figurehead Osama bin Laden recently released a taped statement in which he claimed that the publication of a set of cartoons in a Danish newspaper deemed to be insulting to the Prophet Mohammed was a crime more serious than the killing of women and children. “You went overboard in your unbelief and freed yourselves of the etiquettes of dispute and fighting and went to the extent of publishing these insulting drawings,” said bin Laden. “This is the greater and more serious tragedy, and reckoning for it will be more severe.”
Despite the threats of violence, newspapers throughout the European Union have shown their commitment to freedom of speech by republishing the cartoons. However, no major media outlets in the United States have followed suit. As Americans, we have not been given the opportunity to stand up and say to the world that we place a high value on rights like the freedom of speech, and that we will not allow ourselves to be intimidated into sacrificing these rights by religious extremists. Until now.
TurbanToons is a forum where anyone can share his or her own cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed with the world. The drawings do not have to cast the Prophet in an unfavorable light. You could draw Mohammed walking a dog, caring for a sick child, or blowing up a mosque. It’s up to you! And no artistic talent is required. A stick figure with a caption that reads “Mohammed” can make just as powerful of a statement as a more detailed drawing. The idea is to collectively show our commitment to the idea that anyone, anywhere should be able to draw a picture of whomever they want, without fear of violent reprisal.
